Stephenson boiler
The water (5) is heated directly by the firebox (1) and by the hot exhaust gases flowing through the smoke tubes (4). The exhaust gases are drawn out of the smoke chamber (7) through the chimney. The ash falls through the grate (2) into the ash pan (3). The steam collects in the upper part of the boiler (6) and is fed to the steam engine via the regulator (9).
Maintenance of Locomotive Boilers
The boilers on our locomotives are newly built, welded boilers manufactured by the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works, where the locomotives were refurbished.
The boiler water comes from the city of Differdange’s drinking water system. Several additives prevent scale buildup on the heating tubes and the firebox and neutralize the oxygen that could cause corrosion (pitting).
The boilers are drained and cleaned every 4 to 6 weeks. They are also drained if the locomotive is taken out of service for more than 2 weeks.
